January 21 - Athens, Greece

A powerful bomb was defused outside the residence of a US Embassy attache engaged in combatting drug trafficking. The attempt was claimed by the Epanastatiki Organosi 17 Noemuri (Revolutionary Organization 17 November R17N).

January 27 - Beirut, Lebanon

Rudolf Schray, a West German citizen, was kidnapped by Hizballah. The abduction was carried out against the backdrop of the trial concurrently held in West Germany of Abbas Ali Hamadi, a Hizballah member who was arrested there in January 26, 1987. Hamadi was accused of the kidnapping of two West German citizens in Beirut in January 1987, apparently in retaliation for the arrest on January 13, 1987 in Frankfurt of his brother Muhammad Ali. Muhammad Ali Hamadi, also a Hizballah member, was involved in the June 1985 hijacking of a TWA airliner to Beirut.

The kidnappers, believed to be members of the Hamadi clan, demanded the release of the two Hamadi brothers in return for the release of Schray.

Iranian and Syrian pressure exerted on the kidnappers apparently eventually played a role in bringing about Schray’s release into the custody of Syrian army officers in Beirut, on March 3, 1988. There was no hard indication that the West German government concluded a deal in order to gain the release of the captive.
